KFU Graz

The University of Graz, which was founded in 1585, is Austria’s second oldest university and one of the largest in the country. Many excellent scientists, amongst them six Nobel laureates, have taught and researched here. As a comprehensive university, the University of Graz regards itself as an international institution for education and research committed to research and teaching for the benefit of society. It is our policy to maintain freedom in research and teaching, which permanently commits us to social, political and technological developments. Increasing flexibilisation and globalisation are the essential frame conditions. The studies and scientific disciplines are assigned to six faculties: Catholic Theology; Law; Social and Economic Sciences; Humanities; Natural Sciences; Environmental & Regional Sciences and Education. As a modern scientific institution, the University of Graz is responsible for top-ranked research at the international level. Research core areas include Brain and Behaviour, Heterogeneity and Cohesion, Europe’s Cultural History and its Interpretation, Learning – Education – Knowledge, Modeling and Simulation, Molecular Enzymology and Physiology, Environment and Global Change. The main interdisciplinary focus “South Eastern Europe” - unique in the German speaking countries - is the result of decades of collaboration with institutions in this region.

The SUSTAINICUM COLLECTION is assigned to the Department of Geography and Regional Science.

The Department was founded in 1876 at the University of Graz. As Graz Integrative Geography the orientation within research, training and lifelong learning focuses on intact environment, humane society and socially compliant economy, which form the condition for sustainable development in space and society. The core competencies in research of the Department are “Sustainable Urban and Regional Development”, “Integrative Research in Tourism Development and Planning”, Mountain and Climate Research and Education for Sustainable Development, with a strong focus on the application of modern technologies like Geographic Information Systems, Remote Sensing, and Digital Cartography.
